He derived “magnium” from the common name for magnesium oxide, magnesia. Eventually, “magnesium” became the standard term.

  • Early Uses: Ancient civilizations used magnesium in laxatives and Epsom salts. In the 1600s, water from the famous Epsom spring in England was a popular remedy for purifying the blood. By 1695, Nehemiah Grew isolated magnesium sulfate from Epsom spring water.

  • Scientific Breakthroughs: In 1915, Richard Willstätter won the Nobel Prize for identifying magnesium as the central element in chlorophyll. Today, magnesium is used in treating eclampsia during pregnancy and acute myocardial infarctions.


The Chemistry of Magnesium

Magnesium, with the atomic number 12, has 12 protons and approximately 12 neutrons, surrounded by 12 electrons in three shells. It’s highly reactive and usually found in compounds, like magnesium chloride in seawater. As an alkaline earth metal, it’s part of a group that includes calcium, beryllium, barium, strontium, and radium.

  • Presence: The human body contains about 4-6 teaspoons of magnesium. It’s the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and the second most abundant positively charged ion inside cells.

  • Distribution: Only 1% of magnesium is found in the blood, with the majority in bones and cells of muscles, the heart, and the liver. Healthy heart cells contain ten times the magnesium found in blood.

  • Absorption: Magnesium is primarily absorbed in the small intestine, starting as early as one hour after ingestion.

  • Essential Mineral: Magnesium is one of six macro-minerals needed in larger amounts, along with calcium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and chloride.

  • Deficiency: Approximately 75% of U.S. adults consume less than the recommended daily allowance of magnesium. Alarmingly, 19% consume less than half of the RDA. Many cases of magnesium deficiency go unrecognized due to errors in serum magnesium testing.
